Wood? Is it still worth less?

Post by Raede on Fri Feb 20, 2009 6:28 am

Captain Jax sent a circular message out asking this question and I thought that it was worthy of discussion. Before the 3.0 patch wood was certainly more attainable than the "luxury" resources but that has changed.

In the new era the luxury items can be gathered at the same ratio as wood: 1 worker=1resource per hour. However; All the sawmills on my 4 different islands currently have the advantage of being 4 levels higher than the luxury sites, thus allowing more citizens and more wood.

Supply and demand rules all of the time and as such for me anyhow wood could trade at a 1:1 ratio. My upgrading and building of units has not been governed by a lack of marble or crystal as much as my lack of wood. My sawmills are typically at level 21 and I keep them for the most part fully staffed but still I lack.

I have built the carpenters shop in each of my towns and leveled them up to level 20 netting me a reduction of 20% in wood costs yet, I still run out. Sad

For the more established players who are not upgrading as much, Is this an issue for you?

I have seen nothing but wood shortages since 3.0 came out. In 2.8 I sometimes shut down wood production in several towns because I kept running out of places to stash it. Now it's definitely on an even level with the luxury goods.

I agree with you both. Wood is of equal value with everything else and is often in short supply in my colonies. Evidently the Game Operators agree as if you buy Ambrosia, I don't but just took a peak, they are trading all resources at 1 to 1 at least as I understand it. I will be using the 1:1 ratio as the starting point for all of my trades, regardless of the type of material or resource that is being traded.

Wood has definitely gone up in value. Still, the people trying to sell it for 30 a pop in their trading posts are fooling themselves.

I generally don't have a problem with wood, though - I'm pillaging a lot more in 0.3.0 because it's so much easier. Before, I had to hunt around for someone with a high level port. Now it doesn't matter; I'm only limited by my trade ships and their total supply. Most of what I get from each pillage is wood, since everyone's warehouse seems to have more wood than anything else. Also, I get quite a bit from going back to farm previously tapped out inactives. I guess their supplies replenish rather quickly with the boosted production, even if half their citizens are gone due to lack of wine.

    Got wood?

Post by ambrosiaa on Sat Feb 21, 2009 9:01 am

If anything, wood has become the most expensive good in the game. I have carpenters in all my towns and I still run in to wood shortages the most. Seems like they greatly increased wood consumption. This explains why wood is usually the most expensive thing to buy in the game. I used to purchase a lot of wood and throw it into upgrading the mines on my island. I don't do that anymore!

Think this will affect current mill/lux donation standards and what people consider to be leeching?

If anything, there will no longer be a preference to upgrade the luxury resources over the sawmill. And I expect you'll see a lot more folks using helping hands on their wood collection than previously.

    Butthead: Uhh...huhuhuhuh..."Wood".
Beavis: Yeah! "Wood"! Hhmm hhmm hmm.
