Mr. Bush Free Ramos and Compean

Decorated U.S. Border Patrol officers Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean sit in prison today stemming from the worst miscarriage of justice in recent history.

While interdicting and shooting a veteran drug dealer in the butt for breaking over our southern border with a load of drugs, district attorney Johnny Sutton sent both men up for a dozen years each.

Those men protected American citizens on the front lines of the Drug War, served their country and stood up where most members of Congress and our president sit on their fat rear-ends doing nothing.

Outgoing President George W. Bush possesses the power to right a horrible wrong before his presidency drops into the dustbin of history. While he gave pardons and commuted sentences to several dozen felons like Scooter Libby, he fails Ramos and Compean.

Congressman Dana Rohrabacher said, “The fact that the president has neglected to free these men from their imprisonment while freeing drug dealers, embezzlers and other criminals is insulting to the American people. For the sake of justice, let's hope this is not the last round of pardons and commutations."

Phyllis Schafly, said, "The severity of these charges and the harshness of the punishment are totally disproportionate to the violation in question. Even the illegal drug smuggler, Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, was sentenced to less prison time than our fellow American border guards!"

Important aspects of this case:

*The illegal alien and drug trafficker Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila fled capture by Agents Ramos and Compean after crossing the U.S.-Mexico border with well over a quarter-ton of marijuana in transport.

*During the pursuit, Ramos and Compean exchanged gunfire with Davila wounding him in the buttocks. He escaped and was later apprehended in a separate drug bust while waiting to appear in court. U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton--a friend of President Bush--ordered a full-scale investigation of Ramos and Compean and then asked Davila to testify against Ramos and Compean for shooting him.

*Wasting no time in using Ramos and Compean as an example, the prosecuting attorney Debra Kanov got the court to ignore critical evidence in the case. Instead, the agents were prosecuted on a technicality which requires U.S. Border Patrol to get supervisor permission before chasing and apprehending drug traffickers! Yes, that's right, Border Patrol Agents have to get permission to protect our borders! Of course, Ramos and Compean responding in self-defense, apparently failed to radio in and ask permission before firing upon and laying chase to an armed Davila.

*The court then weighed only one person's testimony as "proof" of Ramos' and Compean's "crime"--the testimony of illegal alien and captured drug trafficker Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila. The court weighed the official incident reports of Agents Ramos and Compean and gave more weight to the story of a proven criminal!

*The court suppressed the fact that Davila was subsequently arrested for drug-trafficking, and granted him a plea-bargain in exchange for his testimony against Ramos and Compean. In addition to the plea-bargain, Davila was given a special Visa to cross the border whenever he wants and treated to top-notch medical care for the injuries sustained during his escape.

*Though Davila was sentenced for drug trafficking--no mention of the fact that he was also an illegal alien--his sentence was a fraction of the harsh and excessive judgment handed down for Ramos and Compean of 23 years!

*Since their imprisonment, scores of legal experts have analyzed the details of the case and concluded overwhelmingly that this was one of the grossest failures of the U.S. justice system in our republic's history. Two of the jurors gave sworn testimony that they were pressured to deliver a "guilty" verdict for Ramos and Compean.

Columnist Doug Patton wrote:"I will lose my last ounce of respect for Bush as my president if he does not pardon Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean before he leaves office. These men put their lives on the line for us just as surely as our brave troops serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, and justice demands a full presidential pardon....It also turns out that this low-life drug smuggler [Davila] re-entered the United States at least 10 different times in 2005 and that he was caught smuggling drugs while he was waiting to testify against Ramos and Compean. These facts were not brought up at their trial."

Congressman Tom Tancredo, said, "These are the kinds of men whose government failed and destroyed them - all while they were serving a cause greater than themselves. These men deserve justice. I, and many other members of Congress, have repeatedly called upon President Bush to exercise his power to pardon - but he has not done so."

What message does this send to the American people? "We don't mind spending billions on fighting terrorism around the world, but we will leave the back door wide open!"

I have met the families of these two men. They suffer greatly! It’s time we all pull together for them to be pardoned or commuted sentences. Every phone call and email makes a difference. Please take a few minutes to defend them as they defended you and your family.
